介绍南非出产、富有特色、迈向国际的时空水文水资源模型-SPATSIM

    SPATSIM时空水文水资源模型是由南非政府的水资源委员会与南非著名的百年名校(成立于1904年,南非前总统曼德拉先生曾任该校荣誉法学教授)罗德斯大学的水资源研究所为主开发的,国际水管理研究所对其中的干旱模块提供了资金支持。

SPATSIM - Spatial and Time Series Information Modelling Software

    SPATSIM is an integrated hydrology and water resource information management and modelling system. It makes use of ESRI Map Objects and the Delphi programming language to create a data management environment with a spatial information front end and a relational database structure (Paradox by default, but other database structures are supported) to provide access to a wide range of different types of hydrological and water resource information. The package includes many utilities for importing data of all types, viewing, graphically displaying and editing data, sharing data with other users and further processing data to create new information. It also provides access to a wide range of linked models and data analysis procedures that are typically used in water resource assessments (rainfall-runoff models, design floods, reservoir water balance models) and ecological water requirement assessments. It has been used extensively by the Institute for Water Research and has been distributed to a number of other organisations both within South Africa and elsewhere.

Help and Further Information    SPATSIM comes with a comprehensive help system that includes a number of 'Road Maps' and other guidelines to the use of the system for specific purposes. All of this information is avaliable on this website as well as locally as part of the SPATSIM installed software. These are periodically updated and users should be aware that the cotents of the website and local help system may be slightly different depending on the stage of any one update.
Copyright and Contributions    While copyright rests jointly with the Water Research Commission of South Africa and the Institute for Water Research , other organisations have also participated and contributed to the development of the system.
    The International Water Management Institute (through their offices in Sri Lanka) funded the inclusion of drought analysis routines and some associated developments.
    The School of Bioresources and Environmental Hydrology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal provided the national database of design rainfall data that is used in some of the procedures.

Availability    The software is available from the Institute for Water Research at no cost (see link below). However, experience suggests that new users will benefit from attending a 2 to 3 day introductory training course. The Institute is available to offer such courses, either at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, or at other centres. Course costs will vary according to location and numbers of participants and Denis Hughes should be contacted about the availability of such courses. There are no charges for routine maintenance and periodic upgrades of the software are available from this website.

Future Developments and Support
    The Institute for Water Research is committed to the ongoing development and improvement of the software. Part of the initial development has been funded internally by the Institute on the basis of income generated through the use of SPATSIM in consultancy type projects. However, the level of support and extent of future developments is largely dependent upon future funding and size of the SPATSIM user community. The larger the number of users, the more likely it is that funding can be accessed to add value to the existing package.
    The Institute is always open to suggestions for future partnerships and cooperative development initiatives that will improve the software and enhance its value to all users.
    A new version of SPATSIM (referred to as SPATSIM-HDSF) is currently being developed in partnership with the School of Bioresources and Environmental Hydrology (University of KwaZulu-Natal), the Water Research Commission and the Department of Water Affairs. While the basic concept remains the same, SPATSIM-HDSF is being developed in a .NET environment using an MSAccess database. Release for widespread use is expected early in 2012.
