PhD Student or Post-doctoral Researcher at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany)
WIPAFF – Job Opening

Analysis of properties and impacts of offshore wind park far fields -
analysis of wind farm wakes and their regional climate impact using
meso-scale wind field models and an analytical wind farm model We seek a
PhD student or a post-doctoral researcher who is interested to simulate
offshore wind farm wakes with the WRF model. The employment will be
limited to a three-year term, starting as soon as possible. The
successful candidate should have some experience in numerical flow or
weather modelling and a background in a mathematical of physically based
science. The work will be done at the Institute of Meteorology and
Climate Research (IMK-IFU) of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in
Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany. In case of a PhD work, the thesis
should be finalized within these three years and thereafter defended at
the University of Cologne, Germany.

Overall characterisation of the project

The aim of WIPAFF is the analysis of wind and turbulence conditions in
far fields of offshore wind farms, i.e., 10 to 100 km behind the wind
farms. This is done in order to estimate the impact of large offshore
wind farms on neighbouring wind farms, and to assess by numerical
modelling the impact of the whole array of planned wind farms in the
North Sea on the regional climate. An existing simple analytical wind
farm model is to be validated in order to use it for rapid planning
processes. The project is a common effort of five joined projects headed
by the Institute for Meteorology and Climate Research of the Karlsruhe
Institute of Technology in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The other partners
are from the University of Braunschweig, the Helmholtz Centre
Geesthacht, UL International GmbH (DEWI) in Wilhelmshaven and the
University of Tübingen. The project is funded by the German Federal
Ministry of Economical Affairs and Energy. The project will run from
November 1, 2015 to October 31, 2018.

The first step will be to integrate an existing ocean wave model into
the meso-scale wind field model WRF and to test the coupled model. An
appropriate parameterization scheme that describes the offshore wind
farms is to be integrated into the model as well. Then the whole updated
model is to be tested and validated with SAR, in-situ and aircraft data
obtained and provided by the partnering projects within WIPAFF. The
updated and tested model will then be used to simulate the interaction
of neighbouring wind farms in the North Sea and to assess the overall
impact of the planned array of wind farms on the regional climate.
Finally, an existing simple analytical wind farm model is to be
validated and optimized by comparison to the numerical model results and
the experimental data from the other projects.
