You can calculate the autocorrelation and estimate the decorrelation timescale (i.e. the first time that the correlation coefficient drops to zero). Decorrelation timescale is roughly represented as the 1/4 period. Half period represents one degree of freedom. Thus, two times of decorrelation timescale represents one DOF. Therefore, you can based on this timescale to estimate the DOF of your time series. Notice that the DOF of decadal variability in the ocean-atmosphere system will significantly decrease due to their long periods.
