Vacancy:
Ph. D. Position in Paleoclimate Modeling at the Alfred Wegener Institute
(AWI), Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven, Germany


Background and tasks:
The position is linked to the BMBF-Project titled „PLOT –
Paläolimnologischer Transekt“, which will improve our knowledge and
understanding of the climate and environmental history of the Eurasian
Arctic. The focus of this position will be on modeling of changes of the
water cycle and its isotopic composition during the last approx. 140,000
years. Simulations with a complex Earth System Model as well as with a
spatially high-resolution atmosphere model will be performed and
compared to data from various paleoclimate archives.

Requirements:
Successful candidates will have have a Master Sc. in physics,
meteorology, or closely related environmental science disciplines and
ideally should have a strong interest in atmospheric physics,
geosciences and paleoclimate studies. Well-founded knowledge of basic
physics and geosciences is a requirement. We are looking for candidates
with enthusiasm and, if possible, first hands-on experience with coding
and running global climate models as well as programming experiences in
FORTRAN and Unix scripting. Candidates should have a strong motivation
and ability to work in a highly interdisciplinary and international
environment. They should be willing to present their results at
international conferences and to publish in peer-review journals. Fluent
English in written and oral form is mandatory.

The successful applicant will become a member of the Paleoclimate
Dynamics Group at AWI Bremerhaven

The research focus of this group is the analysis of different climate
conditions in the past and the identification of driving mechanisms
causing climate change.

The position is limited to 3 years. The salary will be paid in
accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des &#246;ffentlichen Dienstes (TV&#246;D
Bund), salary level 13 (66%). The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.
