Introduction of the Vector-field EOF (V-EOF, hereafter) analysis:

V-EOF is used for analyzing the variability of the vector fields, such as wind and ocean current. It is very similar to the Multivariable (or combined) EOF analysis except for only two variables (i.e. zonal and meridional components) constituting the extended matrix. This method requires the same spatial grids and the same period of time. The results of this analysis include two parts: one is the V-EOF patterns manifested as the vector fields, and the other is the corresponding principle component (PC) time series.

The results of the first two leading modes of wind anomalies over tropical Pacific performed by this function are shown as follows:
